Allergy Testing

Food allergy is a common problem in children and adults. Many patients present with adverse reactions to foods, but are not diagnosed with ‘allergies’ by routine methods. To date, the traditional diagnosis of food allergy is based on clinical history, skin-prick tests, the determination of specific IgE class antibodies from serum.

It’s now known that the underlying mechanisms for allergy are not restricted to IgE-mediated reactions alone, but that there are many different mechanisms that can give rise to these allergy symptoms. One of them is IgG antibody mediated delayed food reactions that can worsen or contribute to many different health problems. These reactions are more difficult to notice since they can occur hours or even days after consumption of an offending food. In some cases, a person’s reaction to a food may occur several days after eating the offending food and the link between the food and their symptoms may not be connected. These “hidden” food allergies are caused by increasing blood levels of IgG4 antibodies in reaction to specific foods. Common offending foods eaten frequently and hard to avoid: Milk, Corn, Wheat, Foods processed with molds such as black tea, breads, and fruit juices.
