BOTOX® Cosmetic is a simple, nonsurgical, office-administered treatment that can temporarily smooth frown lines between the brows,”crow’s feet” around the eyes and forehead wrinkles. It is the only treatment of its type approved by FDA. One 10-minute treatment-a few tiny injections–and within days there’s a noticeable improvement in frown lines which can last up to 4 months. Results depend on muscle thickness, gender, degree of facial expression, etc. At Body Focus, we specialize in Botox injections for the Midland and Odessa, Texas areas.
THE INJECTION PROCESS
The beauty of a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment is that it’s a simple, 10-minute, non-surgical process. And there’s no recovery time. You can even do it on your lunch break.
No anesthesia is required, although we usually numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injecting. Discomfort is usually minimal and brief.
You can expect to be in and out of the office without downtime. You may see a marked improvement within days. Improvement may continue for as long as a month, and could last up to 4 months.
SIDE EFFECTS OF BOTOX® COSMETIC
Do not use BOTOX® Cosmetic if you:
- have an infection where BOTOX® Cosmetic will be injected
- are allergic to any of the ingredients in BOTOX® Cosmetic
- are pregnant or think you might be pregnant
Only your doctor can decide if BOTOX® Cosmetic is right for you. Before starting treatment, tell your doctor if you:
- have any diseases that affect your nerves and muscles. These diseases may increase your chance of side effects with BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment.
- are breastfeeding
- are planning to become pregnant soon
Be sure that your doctor knows the names of all the medicines you are using, including:
- antibiotics used to treat infections, such as gentamicin, tobramycin, clindamycin, and lincomycin
- medicines used to treat heart arrhythmias, such as quinidine
- medicines used to treat myasthenia gravis or Alzheimer’s disease
HOW DOES BOTOX® COSMETIC WORK?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected directly into the muscles between your brows. It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles; this reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those persistent lines to form.
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS FROM A BOTOX® COSMETIC TREATMENT?
Within about 7 days you may see a marked improvement in your frown lines. Lines continue to improve for up to a month, and results can last for up to 4 months.
HOW LONG DOES BOTOX® COSMETIC LAST?
If you discontinue treatment, the frown lines between your brows gradually will look like they did before treatment.
WILL MY FACIAL EXPRESSIONS CONTINUE TO LOOK NATURAL?
Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines is simply reduced, so you can still frown, smile or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows on the forehead and around the eyes.
Axillary hyperhidrosis (sweating of the armpits) that does not respond to topical antiperspirants such as Drysol™, Saldrize™ or Certain Dry™ may be treated with BOTOX®™.
BOTOX®™ is an extract of botulinum toxin and when injected into areas of the skin that produce excess sweat, effectively reduces sweat production for many months. BOTOX®™ injections to the sweat-producing areas of the armpits can frequently provide relief for as long as 6 months. An alternative treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis is surgical removal of the axillary sweat glands.
BOTOX®™ injections are also an effective remedy for palmar hyperhidrosis (sweating of the palms of the hands) and relief can last many months.
However, the pain involved in the administration of BOTOX® to the hands along with occasional problems related to muscle weakness can make BOTOX®™ a less desirable form of therapy for treating palmar hyperhidrosis.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER BOTOX® TREATMENT?
You should notice a significant reduction in underarm sweating within 4 weeks of your first treatment. There is a possibility that some sweat glands may be missed, and you may continue to experience some sweating from the untreated areas.
HOW LONG DOES A BOTOX® TREATMENT LAST?
In a key clinical study, half of the patients had a treatment duration of at least 201 days or 6.7 months. It is not a cure; your symptoms will return gradually, and you will know when the time is right for another treatment.
WHAT IF I DECIDE TO STOP TREATMENT?
If you decide not to have further treatment, there will be no lasting change in the treated areas. The effects of BOTOX® treatment will gradually wear off, and your underarm sweating will resume.
WHAT IS TREATMENT WITH BOTOX® LIKE?
The procedure is relatively straightforward. A small volume of BOTOX® solution is injected into the affected underarm area through a very fine needle. The needle is placed just under the skin, so you may experience some injection-related discomfort. You will receive multiple injections based on your doctor’s assessment of the area that needs to be treated.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON SIDE EFFECTS?
The most frequently reported side effects (3% to 10% of patients) following BOTOX® injection included injection-site pain and bleeding, non-underarm sweating, infection, inflammation of the throat, flu syndrome, headache, fever, neck or back pain, itching, and anxiety.
BOTOX® is approved for the treatment of severe underarm sweating when antiperspirants don’t work.
